3. The Sweetest Scent

I have a folder of Wish List bookmarks. This is my way of not impulse-buying everything I see on the ‘Net – right now I’ve got my eye on a Kyocera ceramic kitchen knife, ultra-warm knit wool tights, this pair of Rachel Comey pumps (hopefully they’ll go on sale someday, although I’m also meticulously combing through eBay for an approximation), and other things. Some things I never end up buying; some things don’t stay in the folder for long.
And some things don’t even make it on the list. Last night I jumped on some Estée Lauder Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia eau de parfum spray on eBay. I associate Estée Lauder with my mom, actually, but the heavenly scent of gardenias wafting from my new issue of Vogue UK plus my rapidly dwindling supply of Daisy spurred me on to click click click on Buy It Now.
Gardenias make me think of curling up next to my mother, who often keeps a vase of sweet-smelling flowers by her bed to help her sleep. It seemed like a good, comforting scent to start wearing in the summer before I move away.
This morning I stopped by the Chinese bakery and bought a sticky rice ball wrapped in a banana leaf for lunch, as well as a curry bun for breakfast. The girl behind the counter offered to warm it up for me; I got to practice my mediocre Chinese, and while I ate the bun at the train station I couldn’t stop smiling from the deliciousness of it. I have a cheaper Kyocera ceramic kitchen knife–serrated, twenty bucks. Totally worth it. I like yer blog!
