FFW Eats: The Glories of Summer
July 13th, 2008 § 1 Comment
Produce is one of my summertime passions. Today Chris and I went to the market and bought things like cherries, two bunches of beets, fresh ravioli (goat cheese and herbs, and mushroom), basil, and gouda cheese curds. I wanted to buy a watermelon, but thought better of it once I imagined us lugging one around the market.
Here’s a recipe from this month’s Food & Wine (I have a free subscription) that I’m excited to try:
Tomato, Radicchio and Grilled-Peach Salad with Basil Oil
1.5 cups lightly packed basil leaves
.25 cup plus 1.5 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
salt & pepper
4 small peaches, peeled & cut into 2-inch wedges
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 small head of radicchio, cored and thinly sliced
.25 cup thinly sliced red onioin
.5 cup crumbled feta cheese
2 large tomatoes, thickly sliced
1. In a saucepan of boiling salted water, blanch the basil until just wilted. Drain the basil, run under cold water, then squeeze dry; transfer to a blender. Add .25 cup of the oil and puree; season with salt and pepper.
2. Preheat a grill pan. Toss the peaches with .5 tbsp of the olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill over high heat, turning once, until the peaches are lightly browned, 3 minutes; let cool. Transfer the peaches to a bowl. Add the lemon juice and the remaining 1 tbsp of oil and toss. Add the radicchio, red onion and feta, season with salt and pepper and toss.
3. Arrange the tomatoes on a platter and mound the peach and radicchio salad on top. Drizzle the salad with the basil oil and serve immediately.

That sounds fantastic! I love farmers markets and fresh food as well. I look forward to going to some at the end of the summer when I visit my parents.
As for 20′s suggestions…I’m no expert but I do like the film “Pandora’s Box” (will probably do a post on it soon).
