166. nose to the grindstone

I received the missing parts for my back-up camera today, so I decided to take a picture of the prettiest thing in my apartment right now: my desk. This is where I spend the bulk of my day, as you might be able to tell by the computer, the books, and the mug of licorice-and-fennel tea next to the photograph of my husband and his grandfather.
I used to feel guilty about my obsession with buying fresh flowers from the farmer’s market. It just seemed like such an unnecessary luxury. But then my friend Kat told me one day to think of it as therapy; sometimes you just have to do nice things for yourself, because they make you feel better. And ever since, I’ve not batted an eyelash at picking up a bouquet (or two, or three) at the market.

Yum, that egg looks so fresh and organic.
Oh, I know! I was so startled when I opened it up and saw how orange the yolk was.
!lowers are 100% necessary.
Lovely space.
I know that I can’t sit down to write a decent short story without a tidy, and preferably beautiful, desk.
Read any good short stories lately?
it’s a cute and lovely space! sure it’s confortable to work here!

I love your work space! I wrote about it here: http://hauteoffthepress.wordpress.com/2009/09/04/fashionable-spaces/
Oh, thank you!
Regarding the short stories–why yes! I really loved Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s The Thing Around Your Neck collection. Each one a jewel! And I’ve been in a D.H. Lawrence sort of mood, peering in on squabbling English couples, enjoying his little extravagances…What are your recent favorites? As for the writing of fabulous short stories, now that teaching is back in full-swing, I am amid the “mustering up the muse” grumblings. I’ll snap out of it–prose will flow like wine very soon…right? How is the novel coming?
I was really inspired by your workspace too. So inspired that I did some workplace styling as well and wrote it up: http://seattleiteimagery.blogspot.com/2009/09/creative-dilemmas.html.
Fresh flowers are the way forward!
