168. thinking of grandma

I found out this morning that my maternal grandmother has cancer. My mom, who’s flying out to Taiwan this week to be with her, assured me (in a tear-soaked voice) that Ah-ma would be okay; the cancer is Stage 1, and she’s going to have a masectomy, which will probably get rid of the cancer.

Still, I was in a daze all day, and couldn’t really concentrate. I took a long nap, which didn’t make me feel much better, and then my friend Amy called to see if I was all right, so I asked her to come over, and she brought a cheering-up mix CD and a really adorable little troll.

We ended up going to a New Age coffee shop to work on our syllabi and lesson plans with another friend, Miriam. We’d been working and procrastinating for about an hour when, in the middle of typing my lesson plan, Miriam said, “Oh my God, look at the sunset!” Bright-pink strips of clouds stretched across the sky.

I wish I could show it to you.

I am so, so sorry to hear about your grandmother. Bad family news is always awful, and particularly scary when you see it shaking the older generations (your poor mama) as well. I’m sending hugs and wishes of love, health and recovery to you and your sweet and stylish grandma via my new age intenets.

I’m sorry to hear about your grandmother… I hope the surgery goes well and she recovers quickly! I know how hard it is to be away from someone you love when they aren’t feeling well, and I hope you are doing OK, too.
