248. In need of a planner like Meggy’s or possibly just her organized brain

January 20th, 2010 § 20 Comments

Rodarte for Target tulle dressRodarte for Target dress (this is what I wore to Eyeliah from Style Symmetry’s virtual birthday!); Zara booties, Vintage green belt; Miss Selfridges tights. In Alfama, the neighborhood in Lisbon I lived in for two weeks. Photos by MTT.

Some scrambled, runny, non-gelatinous thoughts:

+ The woman on the plane next to me was in what looked like 30′s tap shoes and a saucy as hell sweater dress with adorable pom-poms, and had a wavy bob with the most exquisite hair clips–unfortunately, she also coughed the cough of death throughout the entire flight and her scratchy voice frightened me whenever she asked for water. Is it possible for permanent phlegm cobwebs to develop in one’s lungs?
+ I’d like to sleep but I can’t sleep until I finish packing for the eighth time in three weeks.
+ I can’t finish packing because I prefer starting things and not finishing them.
+ Unless it’s dawn and I have no choice but to finish.
+ There’s still three or four hours before dawn.
+ Please, tyrant of a mind, don’t force me to stay up until then. Please?
+ I’d like to learn from Meggy and be more succinct in my posts (but how can I banish the run-on sentence from my writing repertoire?)
+ Our friend Geoff was the best host ever, and oops, we didn’t go a single day in Lisbon without drinking wine or port or both, and when I drink port, I start to fantasize that I’m like one of the awful characters from The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, a movie that I should maybe give a second chance because it annoyed me the first time, or whatever, I’ll just remain annoyed with it.
+ The air in Lisbon was the best air, so were the fish, the miradores, writing monologues in cafes and drinking pingados, and cobbled uphill side streets that I wobbled on like a newborn fawn that never becomes a deer! More soon.
+ I’m excited to catch up on blogs and comments and apologize for being so so lackadaisical lately about commenting and responding to comments.
+ I tentatively put up links to my completely neglected twitter, which so far has zero tweets and may remain that way forever, and to my Chictopia account, which I sort of wish I could delete, but I was emboldened by Meggy’s recent activity on her Chictopia to give it another chance. For no particular reason at all, I became frightened by all of these fashion networking sites, even though I love the girls who post on Chictopia. What do you all think about Chictopia and Twitter? Stay away? Or stay on all day…

Love, Jenny

  • Meggy says:

The last photo of you is so charming! Anyway, I dunno if I’m going to keep up with Chictopia (no one seems to look at my pictures! boo hoo!), but I’m glad you put your links up; I was hoping you would. And EW I HATE PORT. I think it is documented somewhere, or you can ask Chris, that every time I drink port I vomit copiously. I’m so glad that you’re back.

  • I always hate sitting next to sick passengers on the plane. Blegh!!!

    love the black dress.

I’m the same way about social media sites– I’m on a bunch of them, some more than others, but they all make me a little bit nervous for some reason . . . I always feel like I have to tweak up what I write/post to fit into the site better, and sometimes it’s just better to put it all on my blog and write whatever i feel like. Twitter is super awkward . . . I always just worry about bugging people, and the worst part about it is that you have to limit what you say and that you can’t do run-on sentences!!

I love that you’re wearing the Rodarte dress with studded booties!

    • Haha, I never even though about the impossibility of run-on sentences on Twitter. Maybe I’ll never start using it. Social media sites are just scary–you’re right, every single one has a certain personality that I can never quite fit into.

  • Andrea says:

I’m scared of Chictopia. Not because the people are scary – they’re very nice – but because I’m just not cool enough for it! :)

  • eyeliah says:

    Thanks for coming! ;)

  • clockwatcher says:

rodarte becomes you! the color and texture of that building in your pix are amazing.

  • Gina says:

Social media sites are tricky for me too–how much to invest? I enjoy blogging, and I consider part of “sharing” my etsy stuff as well as a lovely way to link to other bookish, vintage loving ladies like yourselves. But I’ve been noticing myself sometimes thinking in facebook status updates…which is strange. The complusion to check my email frequently sort of upsets me as well. But I also experience real thrill when I do receive a message from a dear friend, a delightful comment on the blog, or read a treasure of a blogpost, get inspired by a photograph I probably wouldn’t have come across save for the interwebs…Reading with tea is nice too. It’s all about balance, right? What makes you the most comfortable? Drawing the line when your eyes are tired of looking at a screen, but indulging in the fun of the unstoppable technological future? Balance…
    xoxo,
    Gina

    • Oh, Gina, I couldn’t have said any of this better myself! On my layover in Minneapolis, I was reading this NYT article through the glass (because I didn’t want to pay two dollars!) about how most kids under 18 are using some form of computer, PDA device, blah blah from the minute they wake up until the minute they go to sleep, with school time being the only exception. It shot a bolt of fright through my heart, even though I know that the internet is an amazing resource and has given me so much more communication with people and ideas. I think today is definitely more of a reading with tea day, though.

      • Gina says:

        Thanks, Jenny!
Don’t NYT articles like that inspire the possibility of raising a family of Luddites? Do we know what we’re in for? (But I LOVE the interwebs!)
        Happy tea + books!
        xoxo,
        Gina

I love the shoulder detail on your dress and your earrings!
I once sat next to a chronic cougher on the plane. She kept peeling mandarin oranges, munching (loudly) on them and disposing of the peels in a plastic bag. Then she offered me one. I nearly screamed. I carry face masks now whenever I go traveling — they keep the dry air from bothering me AND save me from my fellow passengers. I also use an eye mask and neck pillow. Basically, my entire head is covered!

oh! I just came across your blog through style symmetry’s birthday party thing (I’m on there too) and I loved you outfit so much i just had to click on your name! You have great sense in style! I love so many of your outfit choices. They are wonderfully unique and tres chic. anyway, I think i’m going to have to add you to my blog list under “fashion” so I can keep up with you! I would be honored if you were to do the same or follow me via Bloglovin.

    stay lovely,
    Julia

    • Thank you for your super sweet comment Julia :) Will you leave your blog link or email it to me? It wasn’t linked to your comment, but I’d love to check out your blog.

it sounds like you had fun in lisbon! i’m expecting some pictures! :) and you look absolutely adorable in that rodarte for target dress! i almost bought it but i wasn’t sure about the bow on the sleeves (and also i was spending too much haha). it’s perfect with those tights you’re wearing :)

and i’ve gradually stopped using chictopia and my twitter is only occasionally updated. it’s tiring keeping up with all these sites!

  • [...] books, and little things everywhere and my mind is a pile of nonthinking turds. Uh, remember when I was crybabying about how I might not sleep until dawn? Well, I didn’t sleep at all, got on a plane, arrived in Iowa City just in time to miss the [...]
